Things You Should Know Before Moving Dogs and Cats to Australia

Banned Cat and Dog Breeds

Australia has banned the following dog breeds:

  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Pit Bull Terrier breeds
  • Perro de Presa Canario or Presa Canario
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Japanese Tosa

These breeds were deemed unpredictable as they were bred as fighting dogs. The restrictions are meant to keep people and other animals safe from harm.

Non-domestic and domestic hybrids, like wolf mixes, are also prohibited from entering Australia.

The following cat breeds are banned in Australia:

  • Bengal cats
  • Chausies
  • Savannah cats
  • Safari cats

Australia Import Requirements

Vaccinations, Tests, and Microchips

Your pet must meet various requirements before they are allowed in Australia, and there are specific timelines for some tests, vaccines, and microchipping. Before relocating, your dog or cat to the country, they have to meet these requirements:

Do they need to be microchiped?

All pets need to be microchipped to enter Australia. Microchips are only recommended for pets that are at least eight weeks of age, so if you’re traveling with a very young animal, you may have to wait to have them microchipped and go through all treatments and testing to enter the country.

What Vaccines do they need?

All animals that are relocating to Australia need specific vaccinations and treatments to be eligible to enter Australia. While many pets require similar vaccinations it is always best to know what your pet needs in specific as they can vary. Reaching out to an All Paws representative is quick and simple and will have you certain about what vaccinations your pet is in need of before travel avoiding any unnecessary delay when traveling.

Permits and Paperwork

You will need a permit to import that needs to be applied for as soon as possible as it is needed to also book the pets quarantine stay. We will take care of this for you! It is best to leave as much time as possible for this to process as they may take 4-6 weeks to have a permit issued.

All pets will have to quarantine for ten days once they arrive in Australia. There, your pet will be safe while you wait, and you will be reunited shortly!
